What’s in a name?

On 11 September 2024, the new Labour government published the Renters’ Rights Bill, the centrepiece of which, as with the previous government’s Renters (Reform) Bill, is an end to no-fault evictions under Housing Act 1988 s21. Does the change of name reflect a greater emphasis on tenants’ rights in the new bill?

The previous bill provided for an end to no-fault evictions following reform of the courts, but the new bill will end the use of s21 for both new and existing tenancies as soon as it is introduced…
